Making Medicines Digital

We invite contributions and participation in the second D3 one day research workshop on the theme of Making Medicines Digital to be held at the London School of Economics (Download pdf version).
The focus of the workshop will be on the multiple ways that medicines are rendered in digital systems, and the proximal and cumulative emergent effects. We are also interested in the implications of considering medicines as ‘new technology’, and in particular the consequence of drugs becoming (by degrees) a digital technology.
Contributions should relate to some aspects of the processes of digitalization of drugs, or offer useful insights from other domains. Work from the D3 project will be presented. We also have a contribution from Professor Johanna Westbrook from Macquarie University, Sydney. As ever, our aim is to generate and test ideas and to learn from people working in related areas and using diverse approaches.
Indicative topics include:
- Analogue versus digital drugs – matters of materiality and assemblage
- Organizational strategies for making medicines digital
- Drugs as infrastructures and connectors
- Aligning networks of supply, use, governance and research
- Personalization and precision
- Generating value as safety, effectiveness, cost, convenience
- Digital health technologies and disruption
The number of participants we can accommodate is limited. If you would like to attend please send a brief statement of your relevant interests and any potential contribution you might present at the workshop (circa 10-15 minutes). Contributions should ideally address a relevant research endeavour you are involved with and may relate to completed research, to an aspect of current work, or ideas currently in play. But be assured, attendance does not require a formal presentation and our primary goal is to be informal and flexible and generate lively and inclusive discussion. We particularly appreciate the participation of health professionals, policy makers, and managers as well as PhD students for whom we can offer some travel support.

- Please ensure that this includes your name, affiliation and email address as well as your relevant research interests and, if appropriate, a potential title for your contribution.
The final workshop programme will be organised on the basis of the contributions offered and so as to involve as many attendees as possible in presentations, panels, rapporteur roles etc. The workshop is free to attend, lunch will be provided.
