One of the most rewarding aspects of being a careers consultant is the chance to speak with students about a whole host of career-related issues in my one-to-one appointments. The students I meet with range from those who have no idea what career they want to go into to those who know exactly what they want to do, and plenty of people in-between! A typical day includes providing feedback on CVs, cover letters or application answers, working with those who are thinking of applying for a master’s or PhD, making decisions about which job to accept, wanting to practise for their forthcoming interview and discuss upcoming assessment centres…and many more topics too!
How to book
The 15-minute (20 minutes, November onwards) confidential appointments can help you move forward with applications or careers decisions. To book, log into CareerHub and select the ‘Appointments’ tab. Morning appointments can be booked from 9:30am the day before you’d like the appointment. If you’d like an afternoon appointment, this can be booked from 9:30am on the same day you attend. We stay open until 8pm on Thursdays and if you’re not in London, we can simply do the session by Skype or telephone (just email careers@lse.ac.uk to request this).
Once you’ve booked, there are few things you can do beforehand to get the most from the time:
Consider what you want to get out of the appointment
What do you want to leave the appointment knowing? What constitutes a positive outcome for you? Are there specific questions you want answered? Note these down before you arrive. Your careers consultant will steer the discussion based on what you want to achieve.
Research
Coming along to your appointment well informed makes the best use of the available time rather than covering the basics you could read on a webpage. To get you started we’ve got online resources on CVs, cover letters and application forms, career planning and job hunting, employment sectors, interviews and assessment centres and further study (plus many more areas, explore our website now!)
Print your documents beforehand
If you’d like feedback on your CV, cover letter, application form or personal statement, print them out and bring them along to your appointment.
Arrive a few minutes early
Give yourself plenty of time to get here to ensure you’re fully relaxed and engaged and able to get the most from your session.
