We’ve got lots of online and offline resources you can use all year round (and up to five years after your course ends!) to help you identify and achieve your career plans:
Tools
Career Builder is a great place to start. It’s designed as an interactive guide to help you navigate the career planning process and find the most appropriate information resources whatever stage you’re at. And what’s more, you can do this all from the comfort of your own room!
Once you’ve used this tool, look into LSE Careers resources and services (read on for more) to continue your progress and get to the next stage of your career planning.
Research
As you might have seen, LSE has a shiny new website and that means so have we! We’re working on moving all our pages over to the new site, but this is the best place to start as you can still access the wealth of useful information and advice we have. This includes:
- what LSE graduates go on to do
- information about different employment sectors eg. media, banking, development etc.
- how to get work experience including internships and volunteering
- how to put together CVs, cover letters, and application forms
- support for students with disabilities (advice on disclosure, reasonable adjustments and more)
- support for entrepreneurs starting a business
- postgraduate study advice
- PhD study and next steps for PhD students
If you prefer doing your research with hard copies of stuff, then visit us on Floor 5 of Saw Swee Hock to browse our library. We have books on different employment sectors, CVs, interviews, entrepreneurship, psychometric tests, PhDs, and more. We also have sector guides and publications like Top 100 Graduate Employers.
Events and appointments
Events are a really great way to meet people, learn about different sectors, roles, and employers and find out what interests you and how to pursue it. Our events programme starts up again from Welcome Week onwards and you can browse, get dates in your diary, and book these on CareerHub closer to Michaelmas Term. Before that, you can get an idea of the kinds of things we organise – including careers consultant and employer-led seminars, sector-specific breakfasts and fairs, and Meet an Alum and other networking opportunities – on our website.
Appointments are where you can get one-to-one advice from our highly experienced careers consultants on (amongst other things):
- how to decide on a career
- what your career options are
- your CVs, cover letters, and applications
- interview technique
- further study ie. master’s and PhD
It’s important to say that careers appointments are for those who don’t know what they want to do as much as for those that do. So don’t worry if you’re not sure what to say or how to get the discussion started, our consultants can help with that so it’s still worth coming!
