Get involved in Tata’s social internship scheme

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

The Tata Social Internship Scheme is a unique partnership between Tata and four leading universities (LSE, the University of Cambridge, UC Berkeley and UC Davis) and is managed and administered by LSE Careers and India Observatory.

Scheme

The primary objective of the Tata social internship scheme is to give students the opportunity to work on social entrepreneurship, environmental development and corporate social responsibility community based projects. These initiatives are set up by the Tata Group of companies and give students a grass-roots level exposure to India. In turn students will bring their international perspectives and research skills to the company projects, and in so doing promote international understanding. You can read more about previous LSE Tata interns on our website.

Projects

The social internship scheme offers LSE students the opportunity to undertake eight week projects working with Tata companies on various projects. These projects have either a development, social enterprise, environmental, sustainable or CSR focus and involve a significant research element. The 2017 projects are running from between the end of June and end of August 2017. Internship places will be offered on a competitive basis and successful applicants will be matched by the Tata Group to an appropriate project. You can view the 2017 projects for an idea of what to expect. Our careers consultant Maddie Smith, who manages the project, gave a presentation on Monday 30 January. You can view a PDF of the slides on CareerHub.

Apply

The scheme is open to all pre-final and final year undergraduates and postgraduate students (including PhDs) at LSE.

  • Students can be from any degree background or discipline.
  • Previous work or volunteer experience with NGOs/community groups, demonstrated leadership capacity and team working skills, excellent communication and organisational skills and a strong interest in India are all desirable.
  • As this is a cultural exchange, preference will be given to students who have not previously spent an extended period of time in India.

You can find more details on the scheme and how to apply on CareerHub. Applications close on Sunday 5 March 2017, good luck!
