LSE Careers recently held a panel to provide students with an Introduction to Management Consultancy. The panel covered various topics of interest to those considering a career in Management Consulting.

Christian Atherton from Simon Kucher & Partners provided an overview of the management consulting sector as it currently stands. A breakdown of the different type of consultancies, including Tier 1, Tier 2 and boutiques and the difference in type of project work and clients within each. He also looked at the growth areas within consulting.

Tim Wong from Inzenka provided detailed examples of projects previously worked on and the type or research and data analysis involved. As well as ‘a day in the life of’… he discussed what it’s really like to work away away on client site and the realities on your work life balance if you want to pursue this career.

Mikayla Henry from Bain & Company provided advice on the application process and case study preparation. She included tips on how to stand out.

There were also some interesting questions from the audience around what makes a good consultant, what’s the most enjoyable aspect of the role, and how safe the sector is in an economic downturn.
