The disability charity ‘Scope‘ has produced a video of oral history interviews of people with cerebral palsy. The video is part of a project entitled ‘Speaking for Ourselves’ which recorded life stories of people over 50 years of age with cerebral palsy. In the video, these people recall what it was like to have cerebral palsy ‘back in the day’ and the attitude of doctors, their peers and families towards them.
Wow! Thank you so much for that. I found this when I was looking for interesting links for our facebook page. When I saw how long it was I wasnt going to watch it as my son is here pulling at me and its pretty difficult to do anything right now. I am so glad I did though. Half way through I had to stop it so I could go and post it on a few group walls on facebook for families of children with disabilities.
It is through hearing the stories of people like you that give families hope and our kids inspiration and strength. My son has Down syndrome and autism and I constantly try to make the right decisions so that his life will be as full as opportunities as possible. Sometimes that can be scary but watching this film makes me know that it is certainly not up to me. One day he’ll be his own advocate and making his own choices and no one will be able to hold him back even if they tried.
Thank you for making this. It made me laugh out loud one minute and cry the next.
