LSE’s Regional and Urban Planning Studies and the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) are exploring people’s housing aspirations for a healthy home.
The following research is being carried out by the TCPA and the LSE Regional and Urban Planning programme. Our goal is to better understand how people perceive their housing needs in relationship to housing quality and affordability.
The data will be used in part to inform the TCPA’s call for a Healthy Homes Act, which seeks to ensure that all new homes and neighbourhoods contribute to the health and wellbeing of their residents.

Our research methods
As part of the research, we are currently surveying tenants and homeowners living in UK. The surveys will be conducted using an online survey method in the first instance, with possible in-person follow-ups via video calls. Survey responses will be anonymous, though interested respondents can volunteer to take part in interviews.
Output of the research
The information collected in this research will firstly go into a policy brief published by TCPA. We may also use it to write one academic paper.

Dr Nancy Holman is one of the programme officers for LSE London. She is currently an Associate Professor of Urban Planning and the Director of the MSc in Regional and Urban Planning Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Martina is LSE London’s Communication Assistant and she also works as an ORAM Fellow for the Department of Geography and Environment at LSE. Martina recently graduated from LSE and holds a MSc in Regional and Urban Planning Studies.
Julia is currently completing an MSc in Regional and Urban Planning Studies at LSE. Prior to her studies, she worked as acriminal investigator and affordable housing specialist for Brooklyn Defender Services, a public defense office in New York City.
Thomas is currently a MSc in Regional and Urban Planning Studies student at the LSE. He worked for the Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), a public broadcast service provider in Hong Kong, as a production assistant before joining the LSE.
Hannah is a Regional and Urban Planning Studies candidate interested primarily in inclusive place-making, sustainable neighbourhoods and active transport. Hannah studied History and Geography at University College, University of Toronto and holds a Masters in History from Western University.

The Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) is an independent charity founded and based in the United Kingdom. It works to improve the reform of the UK’s planning system to make it more responsive to people’s needs and aspirations and to promote sustainable development.
LSE’s Regional and Urban Planning Programme began as an idea, sparked by three LSE professors: Peter Self (government), Alan Day (economics) and Michael Wise (geography) and was officially launched by Sir Peter Hall in 1965. Since then the MSc has trained more than 1000 students coming from all over the world. Its planning Master’s degrees and PhDs helped to produce leaders in the fields of urban and regional planning, architecture, transport, real estate, and academia. Its mission is to understand planning, not as a purely technical subject, but as one that interacts with populations, politics and economy.
