This year LSEUPR launched its 3rd annual essay competition, aimed at incoming or outgoing year 12s and 13s (or equivalent), to give them real experience in writing an academic essay.
The question for this year is

What is the most important lesson for political leaders to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic?

which was superbly tackled by 83 students all over the world. We have young researchers from the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, China, Singapore, Peru, the United States, Pakistan, Canada, Belgium, among others.

This question required engagement with current affairs, critical reading, academic referencing and analytical writing – all of which was given an incredibly good effort by those who submitted.

After careful reading by the members of LSEUPR Editorial Division and LSE Government Society, we arrived at this year’s winners:

First place: Jasper Shuhan Lan (Singapore)

Second place: Melvin Loh Zhi Yuan (Singapore)

Third place: Rory Cooper (the United Kingdom)

Honourable mention

Ned Haslam (the United Kingdom)

Imogen Townsend (the United Kingdom)

Akanksha Das (Belgium)

Over the coming weeks, we will be posting the top 3 entries as a showcase of great pre-university academic research!

We would also like to offer our further congratulations to all who participated. The hard work and effort put into all submissions was clear to the whole UPR Team.

Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with opportunities to engage with academic research.

The UPR team would also like to extend an invitation for all to lively attend our 2021 Virtual Conference, taking place on March 17,2021. More details will be released soon.
