A good thing.

PhD internships provide you with an opportunity to widen your experience and achieve knowledge exchange. Find out more about what’s available for PhD students and learn about one student’s recent experience during his summer internship.

During summer 2018, LSE PhD student Tim Monteath from the Sociology Department spent 12 weeks at the Alan Turing Institute,  the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, with headquarters at the British Library. The Institute runs an annual doctoral internship programme. Tim says:

This internship was a fantastic opportunity for me to develop my skills and knowledge as a researcher and it allowed me to explore new and exciting research possibilities beyond my PhD. The internship consisted of a three month project at the Institute where I worked under the supervision of a senior academic on a specific research project, in collaboration with the British Museum. It was a joy to turn up to work at the Institute, work alongside many other researchers in an atmosphere of collegiality and collaboration. As a Sociologist and a PhD student, it was a welcome break to work as part of team where I was supported in developing new methodological and technical skills which I am now able to apply to my own research.

The Alan Turing Institute was created as the national institute for data science in 2015 and in 2017 artificial intelligence was added to the remit. The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954), whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing are considered to be the key disciplines comprising the fields of data science and artificial intelligence.

PhD Internships are available in different organisations, public sector, commercial and research. For example, in recent years we have helped PhD students apply for intern experience at:

  • British Library PhD Research Placements, London
  • McKinsey and Company 3-day Insight Programme in the UK
  • BCG Corporate Finance Workshop
  • The Congressional Budget Office, Washington, DC. Summer Internship Program
  • Civil Service placements

We advertise paid Parliamentary Internships as well as other short-term opportunities on CareerHub.

LSE Consulting also have research work and consultancy available under the LSE umbrella.
Jeannine McMahon is Director of Consulting.

LSE Summer School teaching and widening participation roles are other ways at LSE to build experience during your PhD.

For all career planning during and after your PhD, LSE PhD students and research staff are invited to make use of LSE Careers and book online for one-to-one appointments, seminars and events.
