Introducing: Meet an Alum

Where can you meet a professional voiceover coach and PR specialist, FMCG national account manager and research economist? They’re all LSE alumni coming onto campus as part of our Meet an Alum series!

What is Meet an Alum?

Now in it’s third year, Michaelmas Term will see 30 alumni visiting LSE Careers to meet students and talk about their careers. Every Thursday evening up to three alumni will visit LSE Careers to chat with you in small groups about their careers, what the industry is looking for, and ways to break into these competitive careers. All visiting alumni are working in a roles and sectors it can be difficult to find out about, so speaking to them will really give you inside knowledge.

Who do you have coming in and what can you talk about?

  • Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work in not-for-profit consulting or in sustainable finance?
  • Are you unsure about the best ways to get experience to become a journalist or think tank researcher?
  • Want to know about career paths and progression in political risk, Public Affairs, PR and Comms, international development or FMCGs?
  • Are you keen to find out more about what a career in ‘alternative’ finance including hedge funds, development, environmental and real estate finance involves?
  • Want to know where a career in policy might take you?
  • Want advice on how to make successful applications and succeed at interview in your chosen field?

Then Meet an Alum is just what you’re looking for! We have alumni coming in from a wide range of organisations including the EBRD, The Institute for Fiscal Studies, the City AM, the Wall Street Journal, Save the Children, HM Treasury, Ministry of Defence to name a few. You can ask alumni about their day-to-day job, their organisation’s application process, how they got into their role, what experience employers are looking for, career paths and for any other career-related advice or tips. If you want some further ideas for questions to ask, here are some suggested informational interviewing questions you can use when meeting alumni.

What’s the setup and how do I book?

As meetings with alumni take place in small groups, places on the programme are limited. Each alum will speak to four small groups of 5-7 students with a shared career interest. To take part in one of the discussion groups you need to book on CareerHub (bookings open two weeks in advance). Events will be uploaded on a regular basis so do check back to see what’s new.
