Diversity in PhD careers

We know from asking our students that significant numbers of PhD graduates progress to research, business and industry careers, other than positions in academia. This group makes up 40.4% of PhD graduates and the sectors they enter are diverse; ranging from consultancy, banking and information technology to NGOs and charities, public sector and government, publishing, logistics, pharmaceuticals and law. Name a field of research, business and industry, and you’ll find an LSE PhD working there.

Due to this varied picture, we’re interested in the experience of individuals, and so we invite you to share your experience of post-doctoral life. As part of the what do graduates do? pages of the LSE Careers website, we have a searchable cache of graduate profiles, that are written by graduates from all degrees and geographic locations.

This is the personal experience of LSE graduates talking about their working lives; who they work for and why; the highs and lows of their particular industry; and their words of wisdom for current students. It’s a good resource to delve into if you want some personal insight into particular industries or job roles.

Write a graduate profile

We’re always keen to receive graduate profiles, but we’d particularly like to hear from graduates of PhDs at the moment, and to know about any work experience or internships you might have undertaken during your PhD.

All graduate profiles are published on the LSE Careers blog and then kept in the searchable archive. It’s a helpful resource for students, alumni and employers, and with an average of 870 page views a day, is also a way of raising your own profile and that of your organisation.
