Making the move: Corporate to not-for-profit evening

On Wednesday 29 March, LSE Careers is hosting a panel and networking evening to support the career development of current students and alumni with 2+ years’ experience in the private sector who are interested in making the move from the corporate world to not-for-profit organisations.

The evening will begin with a panel discussion between 7 and 8pm when a group of professionals with experience working across both sectors will share their insights and advice and take your questions. There will be time after to talk informally with panellists, as well as fellow attendees who have already changed career or are considering doing so.

Panel

Garcia Williamson, RBS to Cancer Research

Garcia has worked for over 30 years in HR specialising in Strategic Talent Management, Coaching, Leadership, Learning and Organisational Development. She has worked across a wide range of sectors, from financial services with Royal Bank of Scotland and consulting with KPMG, to hospitality within Hilton Hotels, technology at Compaq/ HP and energy with Centrica. Latterly she has turned her attention from the private sector to the not-for-profit sector working as Head of Learning and Talent for Cancer Research UK, whose strategy is to ensure that three quarters of people diagnosed with cancer survive the disease within the next 20 years.

Helen McGardle, Founder and Managing Director of SRI Executive Search

With over 20 years’ experience as a search specialist and senior executive coach, Helen’s specialises in sourcing, managing and coaching the most exceptional candidates across the Life Science, Food Security and Sustainability sector. Helen comes from a background in international development having worked with organisations such as the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the WHO, the AfDB, the World Bank and BISA. Helen has previously filled roles such as the Director General and Deputy Director General – IWMI, Director General CGIAR, the Director General in Africa Risk and the Deputy Director General for CIFOR.

Aliyah Kurji, Accenture to On Purpose

Prior to joining On Purpose Aliyah was the Innovation Manager at Acumen focused on developing new initiatives to engage and connect various members of the Acumen ecosystem to change the way the world tackles poverty. Before this she completed the Acumen Global Fellowship based in Nairobi, Kenya with d.light design. Aliyah has a background in management consulting, she focused on Leadership Development, Training, Change Management and Culture Change at Accenture UK. She also has a broad range of experience in social businesses having supported a number of organisations based in the UK and worldwide across education, energy, agriculture, and health.

Kerry-Jane Lowery, advertising sales to field delegate/anthropologist in the humanitarian sector

Kerry-Jane has had what is commonly known as a portfolio career and has moved in and out of humanitarian work over the past 20 years with about nine years of that time spent in the humanitarian sector. As well as working for a wide range of international organisations and charities including the British Red Cross Society and the International Committee of the Red Cross she has also worked in areas like International Sales for the Daily Telegraph and as the commissioning editor of a powersports magazine. Alongside the running of her own photography business, Kerry-Jane wrote a book about particle physics for CERN and works as a copywriter covering a range of sectors.

John Cox, Deloitte to DFID

John joined the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) in 2015 to lead on Responsible Business after spending three years in the Cabinet Office’s Social Investment and Finance Team. His role is to harness the potential of business to alleviate poverty through creating commercial opportunities. Whilst at the Cabinet Office, John led initiatives focussed on social incubation, blended finance and foundation investment strategies, which have helped the UK become a global leader in the field of social investment. Prior to joining the civil service, John spent four years as a wealth manager at Deloitte.
